All You Need To Know About MS General Surgery Course

MS General Surgery is a postgraduate Academic Course imparted in the medical field of General Surgery, which deals with the surgical treatment of various abdominal organs, e.g. intestines, including the esophagus, stomach, colon, liver, and furthermore of the thyroid gland and hernia.

The duration of Masters in General Surgery course is 3 years, spread over 6 semesters, including the examination period. The MS surgery course is approved by the Medical Council of India. It is recognized worldwide subject to clearing the local eligibility exams in the respective countries.

The curriculum includes clinical case discussions, seminars, journal clubs and patient care, hands-on experience of assisting and performing supervised surgeries, hands-on postgraduate clinical training in operation rooms and cadaveric dissection lab thereby improving the clinical skills in the field of otorhinolaryngology.

Subjects studied under this degree are Basic Medical Sciences as related to General Surgery, Neurosurgery, ENT Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics and Cardio-vascular Surgery as related to General Surgery and Recent Advances in General Surgery.


To be eligible for MS surgery, candidates have to qualify with a 10+2 examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics, and an MBBS with a minimum one-year internship. The duration of the course is generally three years but is reduced to two years for a recognized degree in the same field. As per the guidelines issued by DGHS, for General, Foreign, and NRI Category, the candidate must have passed in an MBBS degree recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI), and their Internship completion date should be on or before 31.03.2020

To meet the registration requirements, candidates should have obtained permanent registration with the Medical Council of India/State Medical Councils & Karnataka Medical Council. The registration details need to be submitted prior to the commencement of classes.

Admission Process

The admission is purely based on merit, and the medical colleges and universities conduct common entrance examination for the candidates. Admission to MS General Surgery is based on counseling after clearing entrance exams.

General Category admissions will be carried out on the basis of the valid rank obtained in the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET), 2020, and Foreign/NRI admissions will be carried out on the basis of valid Score in the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) 2020.

It is important for candidates holding foreign degrees to note that they must be registered practitioners in the country from where they have obtained their degree and are mandatorily required to obtain a temporary registration certificate from the Medical Council of India.

Career Prospects

It is relatively easy to get jobs for the doctors who have an MS in General Surgery as there are many hospitals that provide surgery as part of their services. Graduates can work as surgeons in various private or government hospitals.
MS General Surgery graduates can work in many areas like universities, hospitals, clinics, government organizations, and research organizations. The average starting salary between INR 10 to 30 Lacs per annum and can increase significantly with experience. Graduates in MS General Surgery can also work in the teaching field.
