All You Need To Know About BSc Nursing

With greater technology, better medical services, and improving lifespans, the healthcare industry has begun to witness a tremendous growth spurt. A number of hospitals, clinics, and wellness centers have started coming up in various rural and urban localities across the country.

This has led to a surge in the demand for qualified, well-trained, and competent healthcare professionals. As a result, the enrolment in comprehensive courses like BSc Nursing has begun to register an exponential increase.
According to a study conducted by the US-based Centre for Disease Dynamics, Economics, and Policy, India has a nurse-patient ratio of 1:483, which is much above the WHO prescribed ratio of 1:3. This simply means that at present, we are facing a shortage of approximately two million nurses! With both, the public and the private sector working persistently to correct this anomaly, the scope, and future of BSc Nursing is indeed going to be quite bright.
So, if you, too, are vying to build a career in the healthcare sector, registering for a BSc Nursing course from a state-of-the-art university like Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) can prove to be your best bet!

Eligibility

The BSc Nursing course is essentially a four-year-long degree program that is governed by the Indian Nursing Council (INC). The course consists of a variety of different subjects ranging from physiology, microbiology, and biochemistry to pharmacology, pathology, and community health research.
However, before applying for BSc Nursing admissions, you must first determine your eligibility for the course. The standard eligibility criteria prescribed by the INC are:

You should have cleared the 10+2 level from a recognized board with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as your core subjects.

A. You must have obtained a minimum of 45% aggregate marks.

B. You must hold Indian citizenship in order to apply under the general category.

C. If you are a foreign national, you must obtain an ‘equivalence certificate’ from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi.

D. You must also fulfill the age-related criteria which tend to vary from one educational institution to another.

Course Requirements

Even if you fulfill all the aforementioned eligibility criteria, universities will still evaluate your performance throughout the course tenure, before awarding you a BSc Nursing degree. Getting a BSc Nursing degree requires attendance in both – classroom lectures and practical sessions. This is further supplemented by a rigorous system of assessments based on:

Theory

A minimum of 50% marks must be obtained in internal assessment, while attendance of at least 80% is deemed compulsory in all theory classes.

Practical

A minimum of 50% marks must be obtained in total internal assessment coupled with 80% clinical attendance.
As compared to other courses, the requirements for BSc Nursing are more stringent because the profession does not allow for any mistakes.

Scope

BSc Nursing, in 2019, has turned into a vocation with an extremely broad scope. Nursing graduates are getting instantly employed with various healthcare setups such as hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers, community health centers, nursing homes, wellness centers, and non-government organizations.

The career opportunities for nurses with a BSc Nursing degree are as follows:

A. School health nurse
B. Hospital staff nurse
C. Public health nurse
D. Industrial nurse
E. Home care nurse
F. Nursing tutor

Apart from these, nurses might also find employment in the healthcare initiatives started by the government to target the rural and semi-rural areas. Although such employment might be contractual, it would give nurses a wide range of experience in delivering preventive, curative, and rehabilitative care. In fact, with the introduction of Ayushman Bharat, the scope of BSc Nursing is said to have increased manifold!

As a new session for BSc Nursing admission begins, you must make a careful choice before filling out the BSc Nursing forms. This choice involves selecting a university that can offer you a blend of knowledge and experience while preparing you to deal with an uncertain future. In an era where the healthcare market is expected to touch a figure of US $372 billion by 2022, there can be no better option to go for than MAHE.
After all, BSc Nursing is not just a product of your expertise, skill, or proficiency. It is also a medium of saving lives!
