MTech Admission 2020- Here’s What you Need to Know!February 20, 2020
MTech or Masters in Technology is a two-year postgraduate degree in Technology, which allows students to enter various domains of the engineering field. While many BTech students go on to work soon after they graduate, they don’t realize that the scope for a better salary package, promotion, and other employment benefits are automatically enhanced with a Master’s degree. In fact, the demand for MTech graduates is on an exponential rise like never before. Whether the company is small or big and private or public, they recruit engineers in various domains, and, thus, there are multiple recruitment opportunities for an MTech graduate. Therefore, if you are interested in pursuing your higher education in engineering and want to learn more about MTech courses, continue reading this article.
With minor variations in the eligibility criteria among different institutions, the basic requirement to secure admission to a regular/part-time MTech program is-
1. Candidates must have completed their BE/BTech degree in any specialized stream with a valid GATE/Entrance test score.
2. Candidates with at least 60% marks in a five-year program in Science or Applied Sciences are also eligible to apply for MTech courses in some institutes.
Each year, GATE or Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is conducted for admissions in various postgraduate and doctorate level courses in engineering at IISc, IITs, NITs, and IIITs. This national-level exam is jointly conducted by IISc and seven IITs. Moreover, various public and private sectors also accept the GATE score for the recruitment of engineers in multiple capacities. The basic eligibility requirement for appearing for the GATE examination is the same as mentioned above. However, some relaxations in terms of age and passing percentage are also given to candidates belonging to categories other than General. The GATE score is valid for a period of three years, which is effective from the date of the release of the result.
In 2020, GATE is going to be organized by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi in the online mode in the month of February.

In case you have missed out on the GATE deadline and want to get admission for the next enrolment year, you can apply for the Manipal Entrance Test (MET) 2020. Admissions in various streams of MTech at Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT), which is one of the leading engineering universities in the country, are decided on the basis of the rank in MET. There are currently 25 streams of courses offered at MIT, which range from basic engineering courses such as civil, computer science, etc. to newly emerging fields of engineering such as aeronautical, automobile, etc. MTech program at MIT promotes a healthy academic environment, wherein the prospective students get an up-gradation of their knowledge and skills through theoretical coursework, practical training, and internships. Moreover, the placement cell invites top public and private recruiters in the country to ensure world-class placement.
The course curriculum for MTech enables students to equip themselves with the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills. While the courses may vary across universities, the basic course curriculum for some of the popular MTech specializations is outlined as below-
Chemical Engineering– Process Control, Instrumentation Engineering, Fluid Mechanics, etc.
Computer Science Engineering– Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, etc.
Electrical Engineering– VLSI System Design, Power Systems Engineering, etc.
Mechanical Engineering– Thermal Engineering, Kinematics, and Dynamics of Machines, etc.
Since the opportunities to upgrade one’s skills are consequently enabled during this two-years Master’s degree, the demand for an MTech graduate over a BTech fresher is comparatively higher among recruiters. Moreover, despite the highly competitive job market in engineering, an MTech degree in your specialized stream indeed ensures better job prospects.
