BCom: A Great Entry Point to Multiple Industries

BCom, also known as Bachelor of Commerce, is a professional undergraduate degree, granted in the field of commerce. In countries such as India, a BCom is achieved after three years of study at an accredited institution. At the fundamental level, a BCom is a career-opening and career-enhancing degree for young students looking for roles in industries such as manufacturing, banking, accounting, business process outsourcing, telecommunications, and many others.
Besides India, other countries whose institutions offer the BCom degree include Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, Myanmar, Pakistan, Canada, and other Commonwealth countries. The degree and the syllabus for BCom were originally from the United Kingdom. However, BCom is now a legacy of Britain, meaning it is no longer offered in the country.

The Relevance of a BCom in the Modern Economy

BCom is a generalist degree, and its primary objective involves enhancing primary business skills, while also providing knowledge in a particular area of commerce. The majority of topics in the BCom subjects list are business-oriented. Examples of subjects include accounting, finance, business management, human resources, economics, marketing, information management, business statistics, etc. Simply because the degree gives a holistic overview of multiple business-related fields, it remains highly relevant in the modern economy. Irrespective of the automation and advancement of technologies, the relevance of a deep understanding of business and money-related concepts will remain. Acquiring a BCom degree usually helps students get jobs as accountants, bank POs, event managers, and several others.

Eligibility Criteria and Admission Process

Different countries have different eligibility criteria and admissions processes for a BCom degree. In India, the criteria and subsequent processes are relatively straightforward. Students get selected into colleges on the basis of their score and performance in the 10+2 board exams.
For example, if a student attains a score that qualifies him for a particular university, then he or she can fill out the admission application form of the university. Based on the scores of the pool of applicants who apply to a particular college or university, the institutions release merit lists of selected students. The lists are released in multiple rounds depending on the vacant seats in the institution. Selected students are required to pay the necessary admission fees to confirm their seats.

BCom Course Variety and Future Prospects

BCom is inherently a generalist degree. However, even with the generalization of certain common subjects, there are various BCom Specialisations available in colleges across India. These specializations allow students to learn general skills while also getting specific knowledge in special areas.
Specializations range from broad level ones, such as a BCom Honors and a BCom in Management Studies, to relatively focused BCom degrees such as a BCom in economics, BCom in Foreign Trade Management, BCom in Taxation, BCom in Banking Management, BCom in Accountancy, BCom in E-Commerce, and many others.

Career prospects post acquiring a BCom degree in India are solid. Typical jobs that a BCom graduate can vie for include Tax Consultant, Event Manager, Commodity Trader, Account Executive, Bank PO, Travel & Tourism Consultant, etc.

BCom degrees can be great entry-points into industries

India has some of the best colleges for attaining a BCom degree and gaining an entry-point into various industries, such as manufacturing, banking, accounting, business process outsourcing, travel and tourism, telecommunications, etc. Furthermore, a BCom can also be a great launchpad for postgraduate degrees such as a Masters of Commerce, an MBA, a Chartered Accountant degree, and many others. Overall, a BCom degree is a wonderful undergraduate-level education to get started in the business world.
