Bachelor of Optometry: Course Details and Career Prospects

Optometry or the study of vision care and wellness is a discipline that is gaining a lot of popularity in the last decade. Not to be confused with ophthalmology (certification by Optometry Council of India), which deals with overall eye care, diseases, and corrective surgeries, optometry deals with primary eye care and vision correction.

Bachelor of Optometry course revolves around the examining, diagnosing, managing and treating ailments and systemic conditions pertaining to the eyes. It is designed to equip students with the clinical skills needed for primary eye care and visual screening. It is a four-year course consisting of 3 years (6 semesters) of classroom study followed by one year of internship. The internship period helps the students gain hands-on practical experience in visual care and optical system.

The Bachelor of Optometry syllabus includes subjects like General Biochemistry, Ocular Biochemistry, Geometrical Optics, Optometric Instruments, Pathology & Microbiology, Public Relations, Research Methodology and Statistics, Pharmacology and Hospital Procedures. The syllabus pattern is designed to equip students with essential subjects like ocular anatomy, diseases, and pharmacy. Bachelor of Optometry fees in a reputed college/university can range anywhere between 4-6 lakhs.

To be eligible for this program, you must:

A. Have completed a 10+2 education from a recognized board with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology as major subjects

B. Must have a minimum overall aggregate percentage of 60% or above in all the major subjects

C. Must have completed 17 years of age at the time of admission

D. Must have acquired the relevant pass percentage in the qualifying entrance exam and pass the counseling/Group discussion round conducted by the university/college
